Candles have a variety of uses from lighting and illumination to relaxation and aromatherapy. The latter isn’t often talked about which can leave people wondering where to start.

What is aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils to manage symptoms and boost well-being. The two ways it is commonly used is through topical, or on-skin application, or inhalation through smelling scents.

It is said that scented candles can play a role in the physiological effects of mood, stress, working capacity, and mental health.

Popular Scents for Relaxation

  • Lavender - Lavender is widely known to help with sleep and relaxation. It’s said that the calming aspects help you unwind, soothe stress, and release tension. People use lavender to help with migraines and insomnia.
  • Peppermint - Peppermint is advised for reducing tension and anxiety. It helps those who feel mentally exhausted. The scent also relieves the feeling of hunger.
  • Eucalyptus - Eucalyptus promotes mental clarity and reduces mental fatigue. When paired with spearmint, the pair boosts relaxation after an eccentric day. Eucalyptus also helps with respiratory problems, helping you breathe better while relaxing.
  • Vanilla - Sweet vanilla is considered one of the most calming scents. Burning vanilla candles give a calm and soothing aroma that causes the body to relax and lower high heart rates. 
  • Sandalwood - Sandalwood is a type of ayurvedic medicine that helps with relaxation. It’s a natural pain reliever that relieves tension, exhaustion, and headaches. Sandalwood is a popular scent because of its earthy tones.

  • Citrus - Citrus scents are often associated with positive and uplifting energy. It is also used as a natural agent that can kill strong odors like cooking scents and cigarette smoke for example. Citrus can be used to brighten up the mood after a stressful day.
  • Cinnamon - Cinnamon scents have more than their culinary use. It aids in focus which is useful for students as it has been said to improve cognitive function and memory.
  • Ginger - Ginger is perfect for creativity as it enhances your performance, focus, and memory. It simulates and warms the senses which produces the feeling of joy.

How to Use Aromatherapy Candles

To fully access the benefits of aromatherapy candles, you need to properly set the intention when lighting. If you want to wind down and enter an unbothered state of relaxation, engage in activities that promote rest such as reading a book or meditating.

When you breathe in, remember your intention and feel your body slowly enter the state you want to be in.

Be sure to practice basic candle safety. Do not burn your candle for more than 4 hours and make sure that you keep it safe from drafty areas.
